About this site
"Kirk, what's a good California cabernet under $30?"
"I'm looking for a $75 bottle of bordeaux that drinks like a $500 bottle."
"Where do I get the best deals on wine?"
Being a total wine geek, these are a few of the typical questions I get from friends and acquaintances... and as any geek will do, I often answer their question with more questions.... the truth is, there are no easy answers, because it's a situational thing. What's a good deal depends upon where you are, what your tastes are, what vintage it is, etc.
After collecting wine for over a decade, I usually know a "good deal" when I see it. Something's been in the retail channel too long and a decision is made to blow it out at low cost. Pre-ordering wine before delivery at a low mark-up can help the retailer get bigger allocations in the future, and they don't have to front the money for the goods. A mediocre wine-maker has a legendary year, and people don't pick up on it because of it's track record.
These kinds of deals, though, are situational. You need to be in the right place at the right time with the right sensibilities to recognize you've got a deal on your hands.
That's what this website is about. My tastes (typical American palate, big fruit forward reds) and the deals that I think are worth stocking up on.
... enjoy!
